Can You Scrap a Car That's Been Sitting for 10 Years?

November 28, 2025  •  Cash for Cars Calgary

We hear this concern regularly: "The car has been sitting in my yard since 2014. Is it even worth calling?"

The answer is almost always yes. A vehicle that has been stationary for a decade is not worthless. In fact, it may be worth more than you expect. Here is what you need to know.

Why Long-Dormant Cars Still Have Value

Metal Does Not Disappear

The steel frame, body panels, engine block, and drivetrain components in your vehicle are still there after 10 years of sitting. Steel is steel. At today's scrap metal prices in Alberta, the raw weight of a vehicle is still worth a meaningful amount regardless of how long it has been parked.

A 1,500 kg sedan that has been sitting for a decade has the same metal content it always had. Surface rust affects appearance, but the metal is still recyclable and still carries market value.

Dormant Doesn't Mean Dead

A car that stopped running because of a specific mechanical failure (a blown head gasket, a seized engine, a dead transmission) often has everything else intact. The suspension, glass, interior, and body may be in reasonable condition. These parts have value.

Even vehicles with significant rust often have components underneath that are fully usable: differentials, driveshafts, steering components, axles.

Rarity Can Work in Your Favour

Older vehicles sometimes have parts that are no longer in production and are actively sought by hobbyists or owners of matching vehicles. A 1998 Suburban or a 1995 extended-cab F-150 may have parts that command a premium in the used car parts market. Buyers who are aware of this will price accordingly.

What Deteriorates Over Time

Knowing what typically degrades helps you set expectations:

  • Rubber components: tires, belts, hoses, and seals all dry-rot over time
  • Fuel system: old fuel degrades and clogs injectors and carburetors, but this rarely affects scrap value
  • Interior fabric: UV exposure and rodent activity can destroy upholstery and wiring harnesses
  • Brakes: rotors and calipers rust solid after extended non-use
  • Battery: completely dead after a few months; not a significant value component anyway

None of these issues prevent us from making a cash offer. We do not require a vehicle to be clean, operational, or even complete to purchase it.

Practical Considerations for Long-Dormant Vehicles

Tires and Movement

A vehicle with flat, dry-rotted tires cannot simply be driven onto a flatbed. Our drivers carry the equipment to load vehicles that cannot roll under their own weight. This is a standard part of the job. You do not need to arrange anything special.

Location on Your Property

If the vehicle has sunk into soft ground, been partially buried, or is hemmed in by other objects, call us before booking a pickup and describe the situation. In most cases we can still retrieve it, though complex extractions may occasionally affect the logistics.

Missing Parts

If the vehicle has had parts removed over the years (catalytic converter, engine, doors, hood), let us know when you call. Missing components affect the offer but do not eliminate it. The remaining vehicle still has value.

Documentation After 10 Years

After a decade, you may have misplaced the vehicle title. This is common. Call us and describe your situation, as requirements vary by circumstance and in many cases we have options for proceeding without a title in hand.

Having a government-issued photo ID is the most important document for the transaction.

What You Can Expect From the Process

  1. Call or fill out the form: describe the vehicle and its location on your property
  2. Receive a cash offer within minutes
  3. Schedule a pickup: usually same day or next day
  4. Our driver arrives with the right equipment to load the vehicle
  5. You receive cash at pickup

The whole process is no more complicated for a dormant vehicle than for one you drove last week. We have logged many pickups of cars and trucks that had not moved since the Harper government.
